Strategies to work on with my Year 9 Low literacy students

From: Sonya Robertson

I will take time to focus more on vocab strategies for my Year 9 students, choosing specific key terms each week (10 - 12). I will give students opportunities to learn key concepts and show they understand these terms through vocab jumble, spelling tests, mix and match with images, writing their own sentences, paragraphs writing towards writing their blogs. Lots of repetitions.

Interesting thoughts

Curriculum - what's important.

Sarah Martin had an interesting conference about
What's is vital in our teaching . What should we be putting our time into?
How much can we expect from our teachers ?

Takeaway

That no matter what year level we have, we need to help students notice what's going on around them. If they don't notice they've made a mistake, they'll continue making the same mistake. If they don't notice what's happening in a picture (or a paragraph), they're unable to talk about what they see or read. We need to support each one by talking about words, by using descriptive and interesting words that capture their imagination, and don't just rush onto the next thing too quickly. Slow down. Enjoy what we see and hear.

A Challenge and a strategy

My challenge is increasing the reading comprehension of a secondary English language learners. One strategy I used intensively is to teach them how to scan the text as part of 'Dive into the text' or 'Talk to the Text'. In scanning, they look at the title of text, sub-titles, pictures, graphs etc and generally words that might be important to the text. With that comprehensible knowledge, they predict what the text might be about and connect that to their prior knowledge. This already begins to give them a degree of comprehending the text before they begin their first reading of the text.

Peer teaching

When you have a mixed ability class and struggle with slow learners,it would be a good idea to ask the confident ones to teach and help the, slow learners. Both parties get more confidence

Provide consistency in learning tasks for students in vocabulary/inference and independent activities

Connect with the Physical Education department at Tamaki College - meet the staff, view their site, observe their lessons and find out how to bridge the literacy and vocabulary gaps that the Year 9's & 10's lack coming from our full primary & intermediate schools.

Just as in 6 year nett where learners write as many words in a certain time, they say as many words as possible in 1 minute.

Something new that I will try and that piqued my interest is getting my readers (reading purple-Gold) to record themselves while reading and then listen back to it. I've been doing this sometimes with just my purple readers huh need to do it more often and with gold readers. I need to do this with the students reading at higher levels who have good comprehension but poor fluency.

Voacb voacb vocab! Expose students to more higher level vocan keeping in mind career pathways for year 7-8. Awesome sharing time!

Oral language building

Jo has been creating oral language experiences with her class. They have been engaging in hands on experience and explaining what they are doing as they do it.
Example: building a forest in class. Child "I am placing crunchy leaves. "

I really enjoyed this session of sharing! One thing i want to try is to incoporate card games to make maths fun and mor engaging

Feedback from TC workshop

Hi everyone,
My Year 2 learners are enjoying the strips of paper that have words written on them to use for their story writing.
They are also using topics used from our Inquiry on "Something in the water" looking at animals, birds, insects and sea life in the land or sea environment.
As a result learners have been writing stories using more detail.
Thanks,
Sonali.

Being deliberate in my learning design to hit the needs

Utilise buddies within groups, hit dose and density groups using phonics, handwriting or oral language groups, with my expertise. Book a 15min slot at end of reading 4 x a week.

I learned some ideas of how to work dose and density into my literacy program to target specific learning areas of learners that are at a range of different levels.

Group behaviour management

Managing challenging distruptive behaviour
Resolve by: giving responsibility to students to support their peer and praise positive behaviour relating to school values

Interesting takeaway

Somehting that piqued my interest today was how I can get my learners to become engaged in reading and want to read for meaning. Another focus that I will be looking in to over this week is the comprehension in reading and what I can use to get leaners more engaged in this.

Interesting takeaway looking at texts and images and how when there are less of these available the comprehension tends to slip.

Bouncy balls is a strategy that I'm going to try with my learners when they are doing a quiet activity.

videoing Yourself

I enjoyed Dorothy's strategy of videoing herself teach (fast-paced speaking), then getting students to observe themselves as she taught and give feedback on their level of understanding...etc

Giving the power to her students

Dorothy Apelu's feedback on the strategy that she used in her classroom was great. Then giving the power to her students to reflect on their behaviour during her class was powerful.

What had my interest piqued

Something that has piqued my interest today is learning from many different teachers from both high school and primary school about engagement regarding males.

We had many discussions about how disengagement with boys was starting as young as 7-8 year olds, all the way up to high school.

I would like to look into what would pique their interest and keep them engaged in their learning. Make surveys getting their feedback about what way they would find themselves more engaged.

Purple folder

I like the purple folder idea for teachers and learners to have a time out without the learner knowing that it's a time out.

Thanks.

Purple folder

Using a purple or something similar for when teachers/ learners need a brain break.

Keeping learning fun and engaging!

Active phonics! Make learning fun and get them moving at the same time. Rich hands on learning tasks lead to vocabulary filled writing experiences.

Active phonics

Active phonics. Please sir can I cross the bridge. All the learners have a word on them with a particular blend on it. The teacher says only if you have the word....
More than one child can have the same word.

What piqued my interest today?

Listening to others challenges and strategies. Disengagement of students - changing up the lessons and keeping the learning interesting. One on one, small group and whole group.

My challenge workshop with Dorothy

I am going to try to build confidence of my students by asking them to share their ideas loudly example in a car park.
Yell out and it will help in breaking the ice.

'Speed dating' as a way of sharing ideas quickly and developing clarity. By repeating the same idea to multiple people, I found I was able to express my thoughts more clearly and efficiently by the 3rd or 4th time. Could be a useful exercise for getting kids to summarise or create an 'elevator speech'?

But, they don't think it is, they think they're doing a job for the teacher.

Empowering learners

- I learnt the importance of catering to every learners needs and setting up strategies/timetables for children to cater to this, even if it's behavioural when the learner is needing some 'time out' to send a note to another teacher to have some space and time out of the classroom so he/she will come back and ready to learn.
- empowering learners with buddy set ups.

Feedback

What I have resided today is that the issue of confidence goes across all year groups and it is affecting the inquiries of many teachers.
What I need to do moving forwards is to contact with the teachers who raised this as an issue and collate together some things we could try together as a class.
One example of this is sharing in the class with different group sizes as Trina suggested. This gives different experiences and growing confidence.

Need a time out from a learner?

Send a purple folder with a note (or no note if you are too busy!) to another teacher! They will keep them busy for a while!

Differentiation

Rich dialogue about what level of differentiation is a doable and reasonable ask of teachers.

What piqued my interest from today?

Multiple inquiries into truancy and how that impacts children's learning.

Multiple inquiries into children's confidence and how that impacts children's learning and growth.

Challenges from the "library"

  • Language development creates barriers beyond classroom capabilities...

  • Devices v Book work - managing resources...

  • Making connections with the real world - authentic learning experiences setting our students up to succeed...

  • Motivation to get them to school and then to connect with the curriculum work...

  • Not listening to instructions and not completing work...

  • How to get boys to write...

  • Device management and keeping expectations of those devices...
